Hello! I love your site! It's so cute! I especially love your pixelings page!! I'd been thinking of doing something similar; I'm so glad the tradition is still being carried forward! :D

this website is super interesting! for me, it's almost like an online "culture shock" as I have only ever used the popular websites (aka instagram or youtube) but didn't know little cute websites like this existed :)

hello ceriae, i'm finally responding to your comment lol. it's funny you ask about the intersections between my queerness and my asian diasporic experience—i've found that the two were rarely at odds with each other, but whenever i tried to enmesh them, i felt detached from myself. full disclosure that i'm chinese and describe myself as a communist/socialist interchangeably (a combination which has notably created a lot of difficulty when describing my identity online). if it says anything about the discrepancy in confidence between my queer identity and my asian identity, the full transcript of the interview with my friend (who is now a berkeley ethnic studies graduate) was incredibly long, and i specifically published only the part where i ranted about queer assimilation. when i did talk about being chinese, it was also a rant about assimilation, but i had much less to say. i grew up in a predominantly asian community and went to a college prep high school where 80% of the student population was asian, so i rarely questioned the nature of my ethnic identity. i think my identities inform each other in the sense that they are primarily political to me; me being chinese is a political experience rather than an inherent one, and so is me being queer/trans. but my understanding of asian american (which was originally coined as an anti-imperialist panethnic identity!) politics is a lot more limited than my understanding of queer politics. i think as a result, i shy away from interacting with my ethnic self because i feel underqualified to do so in a way that felt "righteous" or "correct" in accordance to my personal politics. i know how to approach queerness from an insurrectionary standpoint, but i've yet to find how to do that with me being chinese. this is largely just personal cowardice. that being said, i wouldn't say that my queer and chinese identities are hostile to one another. it's quite the opposite, actually. of course, i experience mild queerphobia from my family, but i don't attribute this to them being chinese. i think it does us a major disservice to ascribe results of western oppression to asian traditionalism. i like to think that strengthening my relationship to my ethnicity also strengthens my relationship to my queerness. i find a lot of comfort in using 佢 (the cantonese gender neutral pronoun) to refer to myself and i also find comfort in knowing how deeply queerness is rooted in chinese history before western colonialism corrupted it. i take great joy in being chinese in ways that make sinophobes seethe, too. to become closer to my chinese self is to become divorced from the parts of me that are westernized, colonial, or hegemonic—and that is also queerness.

hey there!! sorry this is like a whole month late, but i really appreciate you sharing your perspective! i was inspired by your insight to write a little piece about asianness and queerness in my own life - i hope it'll be interesting to read for you!
